To further illustrate David's internal conflict, Baldwin describes Giovanni's room, the setting of much of the novel, in great detail. By zooming in on David's inner turmoil and anxiety about his desire for Giovanni, Baldwin helps us understand the daily mental, physical and emotional difficulties that LGBTQ+ people endure in the fight against internalized homophobia and heteronormativity. One night, a zombielike figure warns David he will burn in Hell if he gives in to his desire for Giovanni. Their feelings soon become complicated, however, as David feels that his desire for Giovanni could be dangerous. When Giovanni looks at him, David feels as if no one has truly looked at him before. He is instantly attracted to Giovanni and feels a connection. David has proposed to his girlfriend Hella, who goes off to Spain to consider his proposal. Our protagonist David meets Giovanni at a local gay bar. The novel was published in 1956 - a particularly impressive feat during the mid-19th century when homosexuality was still considered a mental illness in the United States - and goes beyond the sterile categories of LGBTQ+ identity politics and towards the messiness and risky nature of human attraction and desire. ![]() ![]() Sixty-five years after its publication, James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room feels as trailblazing as ever. ![]() ![]() ![]() Her lover Aegisthus, Agamemnon’s cousin, has connived with her in the murder. She slaughters him in his bath – kills Cassandra too – and displays their butchered bodies to the multitude. ![]() ![]() But her love has curdled and withered into something entirely unforgiving, and now he must pay the price. It’s likely that Clytemnestra, passionate and strong-willed, did love Agamemnon once. For ten years she has been nursing her fury at Agamemnon’s actions before the war, when he sacrificed their eldest daughter Iphigenia to raise the winds that would take his ships to Troy. But Clytemnestra’s warmth is feigned: she’s been waiting for her husband’s return, oh yes, but for only one reason. And Agamemnon’s wife Clytemnestra comes to add her welcome. The people welcome him home, delighted to have their lord back with them after ten long years. In his entourage comes Cassandra, the captive Trojan princess cursed with prophecy, whom Agamemnon plans to make his mistress. The eponymous great king has returned to his land of Argos from his campaign in Troy. Written in 458 BC, when Aeschylus was in his late sixties, this feels like the Dane’s ancient counterpart: if Hamlet is the great modern exploration of the self, then the Oresteia is a monument not just to human nature, but to civilisation itself. Seeing this the day after Hamlet, I definitely feel that I’ve met my Great Tragedy Quota for this month. ![]() ![]() ![]() His other stats were still a 1 which is worse than most children! The one thing the MC was really good at was finding the game like mechanics of the monsters in the dungeon in order to beat them. After he raised his defence stat he decided to raise his strength more. All the MC talked about was grinding in the dungeon and increasing his stats but he only looked at his stat sheet maybe 4 times in the whole book. He then switched his perk to defence and it shot up to 98 after a couple of weeks. He kept grinding until his strength was 68. Normally raising the stat 1 point would take weeks. When he went to the dungeon he rose from a 1 to a 7 in a single day. When he started on this world he was a 1 in every category. Which allowed his to grow the stat he designated very fast. The skill that the MC got when coming to this world was called accelerated growth. The skill list and stat list was laughably simple. There was a lot of talk about women "pushing their breasts into his arm" and non stop sexual innuendo, but not much action on that front. I felt like this was a pg-13 harem story. It was more of a light novel than a harem fantasy. I liked the MC and the story was very easy to read but it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. The new world has dungeons and everything one would expect. Guy dies and is offered a chance to go a new world with magic and mystical creatures. ![]() ![]() ![]() I found out about this book from the facebook group Harem Gamelit and it seemed interesting. ![]() |
